If you’re traveling abroad and don’t speak the language, you don’t want to be stuck in an unfriendly city.
Travel + Leisure magazine asked 200,000 of its readers to rank over 200 cities in the world in various categories. One of the most interesting ones was “warmth towards visitors.”
This generally means how helpful the locals are giving directions, how much they smile, and how patient they are with you butchering their language.
Here is the list, in reverse order:
15) Boston, Massachusetts, USA
“The attitude is awful,” one respondent told Travel and Leisure. “Random strangers will comment on [you]—Mind your own business, Boston!”
14) Frankfurt, Germany
One of the worst complaints about Frankfurt was how unfriendly and complicated its airport is. Maybe travelers have a skewed perception of the city because they spend so much time there.
13) Washington, D.C., USA
Despite being the capital of the world’s biggest economy, D.C. is not known for its friendliness. “Bobby Kennedy was right! [It’s] a city with Southern efficiency and Northern charm.”
12) Miami, Florida, USA
Don’t confuse the weather with its social warmth. “It’s as if someone took the worst part of Los Angeles and slathered coconut oil all over it.”
11) Beijing, China
Besides the rampant pollution, the city simply has too many people. If you’re outside of a hotel, don’t expect much pampered hospitality.
10) Cannes, France
It’s been called the film capital of the world, but that glamour may be in the past. “Cannes is like an aging beauty.”
9) Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
Lights. Alcohol. And gambling. The flamboyant and jittery city is only friendly if Lady Fortune smiles.
8) Baltimore, Maryland, USA
The recent Freddie Gray protests didn’t do much to lighten the mood of the city. Tourism to the city took a huge hit last year after the chaos errupted.
7) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
If you aren’t cheering for the right team, don’t expect a home field welcome. “[I] went to baseball and hockey games in Philly, and was heckled by rude fans because I’m not for the home team.”
6) New York, New York, USA
“Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard,” the famous commencement speech goes. It’s not a surprise that New York made the list. Most New Yorkers are already too annoyed at tourists.
5) Los Angeles, California, USA
Don’t mistake the show business charms with its inhabitants. Many have noted that the city has a “holier than thou” and pretentious attitude, which isn’t too surprising given that its filled with good-looking people.
4) Marseille, France
Being the second largest city in France, Marseille may be the new Paris. The locals may have been asked one too many times for directions.
3) St. Petersburg, Russia
Cold, frigid, and grisly. While you can be awed by its beautiful architecture, don’t be too awed by its residents.
2) Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA
The city is still recovering from the 2012 Hurricane Sandy, and like Las Vegas, “it’s fun—if you like to gamble and don’t mind rude, fast-paced people.”
1) Moscow, Russia
And the award for the most unfriendly city goes to… The notoriously cold winter, obnoxious traffic, and infamously aloof Russian attitude all make Moscow the most unfriendly city in the world.
